Description:Position will remain open until filled.
Duties:The Principal Policy Analyst will become part of the full-time staff supporting The New York State Task Force on Life & the Law (http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/taskfce/index.htm), New York's bioethics advisory commission. The Task Force is a nationally-recognized, multidisciplinary body comprised of leaders in the fields of law, medicine, nursing, philosophy, and bioethics, as well as patient advocates and representatives of diverse religious communities. The core function of the Task Force is to formulate policy recommendations on issues raised by advances in biomedical science and technology. Issues addressed in past Task Force projects include: genetic testing and privacy, assisted suicide, assisted reproductive technologies, determination of death, dietary supplement regulation and allocation of ventilators in the event of a pandemic. Task Force staff also provides ethics support to the Department of Health and works with other Department councils, such as the Palliative Care Council.

Responsibilities include: conducting intensive public health research and analysis to formulate policy recommendations related to bioethics; preparing for and attending meetings of the Task Force and the Palliative Care Council, as well as relevant outside meetings; serving as project manager for the State’s grant distribution for palliative care; working with the Task Force’s Executive Director and Senior Attorney to design, coordinate, and facilitate meetings of medical experts and other relevant stakeholders advising the Task Force and the Department of Health; developing and conducting focus groups and surveys; public speaking on Task Force projects and issues; writing topical primers, discussion outlines, and report chapters; soliciting external grants; coordinating/supervising an internship program for public health graduate students interested in bioethics; & other related duties.
Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications: Masters Degree or Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., public health, public policy or public administration) and at least two years experience involving policy research and writing.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential. Scientific, medical and/or bioethical background preferred.
