Duties:The Asthma Program Coordinator will oversee the New York State (NYS) Asthma Control Program and the implementation of the New York State Asthma Plan. The incumbent will be responsible for serving as the “locus of leadership” in the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), for planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating the New York State Asthma Plan. This work is accomplished by managing a dynamic multi-agency asthma guidance team of professional staff and the Statewide Asthma Partnership of New York. This position coordinates the activities of four asthma workgroups that focus on asthma surveillance and program evaluation, community-based initiatives, health care delivery and quality and environmental and occupational health. The incumbent will work closely with other programs within the NYSDOH, state agencies, city and county health departments, health care facilities and other key partners to align the goals and objectives of the New York State Asthma Plan. The coordinator supervises, manages and evaluates asthma staff; develops, implements and monitors the State Asthma Budget and expenditure plan; administers grants; identifies funding opportunities and coordinates, prepares and submits competitive grant applications. The coordinator compiles the annual asthma report for the Commissioner of Health in consultation with partners reflecting the status of plan implementation and results and represents the NYS Asthma Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Asthma Control Program grantee meetings and other statewide and national meetings. The incumbent coordinates and publishes asthma information on the NYSDOH web site. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nursing, Health Care Administration or a related field plus 4 years relevant general experience which includes 2 years experience in public health program management and supervision of professional level staff in a public health program; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of relevant general experience which includes 2 years experience in public health program management and supervision of professional level staff in a public health program.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Public Health, Nursing, Health Care Administration or related field. Thorough knowledge of and experience in chronic disease prevention and control, health care and community systems and community partnerships. Strong background and experience in the evaluation of public health programs, quality improvement methodologies and translating science and research into public health and clinical practice. Ability to plan, direct and coordinate activities; coordinate and administer contracts; work with health care providers, government agencies, community groups and other organization as necessary; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; exhibit independent judgment in the development, implementation and evaluation of plans, procedures and policies.
